She was about four and-a-half years old and, like most children on the reservation, raised in the Navajo language. English would be the main language used in the public schools later. However, about 1970, Rough Rock Demonstration School was established on the reservation. Navajo culture and language was part of the
curriculum rather than being suppressed as had been the rule for Native American languages and cultures in US schools until recent years.
